Stump grinding uses a specialist machine to reduce the stump below ground level, usually to a depth of 150–300mm. The resulting cavity is backfilled with the wood chippings produced, which break down naturally over time. Grinding is the most efficient method for the vast majority of stumps and leaves minimal disruption to the surrounding lawn or garden.
Where replanting with a large new tree is planned, or where roots are causing damage to paving or drainage, complete excavation of the stump and main root system may be the right choice. This is more invasive than grinding but gives a completely clear site. We will discuss which approach is best suited to your situation when we come to carry out the survey.
