Crown reduction makes a tree smaller overall by cutting the branches back to suitable side buds or forks. Done correctly, it reduces the tree’s height and spread while preserving its natural shape and long-term health.

Reduced Size

Crown reduction is the right technique when a tree has grown too large for its surroundings — overhanging neighbours, shading windows or encroaching on cables or buildings.

Natural Shape Kept

Unlike topping or pollarding, proper crown reduction cuts back to growing points, so the tree retains its natural form and continues to develop in a healthy way.

Risk Reduction

Reducing the size of a large tree lowers the mechanical load on the root system and reduces the risk of branch or stem failure in high winds.

Is Crown Reduction Right for Your Tree?

Crown reduction works best on broad-crowned, vigorous species. It is not suitable for all trees: species such as beech and birch tend to die-back from reduction cuts, so for those we would recommend alternative approaches. We always assess the tree and its species before recommending crown reduction — if it is not the best option, we will say so and explain why.

Our Standards

All crown reduction is carried out to BS:3998 by our experienced, qualified team. We cut to suitable growing points to promote a good response and minimise stress to the tree. Crown reduction is not a regular treatment — most trees need it only once or twice and then periodic maintenance. We cover Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and the wider North Yorkshire area.
